A colostomy indicates that the opening is from the colon. When the colostomy is in the left colon, only a pad may be needed to cover the opening. When the opening is in the right side of the colon, some type of appliance or bag is required. There are various types of colostomies. The physician and surgeon recommend the appropriate one for each patient.
An ileostomy involves bringing the ileum (the last portion of the small intestine) to the abdominal surface. When waste matter reaches the ileum it is liquid, so an appliance is needed to collect it. However, a type of ileostomy called a Koch's pouch or continent ileostomy does not require an appliance. The physician and surgeon discuss these choices with the patient.
Finding the right type of ostomy supplies is an essential element for living well with an ostomy. After surgery we leave the hospital wearing a particular brand of ostomy equipment. Many people stay with their initial brand and live happily. However, there is more than one manufacturer of ostomy supplies, as well as more than one way to purchase them.
Here are some tips to remember when choosing your type of ostomy supplies:
- Always consult with your ostomy nurse first for information and recommendations for your particular situation.
- Remember that every person is different and you need to find what works best for you.
- You should feel free to experiment with different manufacturers of the same product or different types of products. Call the manufacturer's toll free 800 number and request product samples, or ask your supplier for a sample.
- Check with your supplier for suggestions for new products. Ask if they have an ostomy nurse or other knowledgeable staff available to answer questions.
- If your ostomy disposal bag isn't leak proof, odor reducing, totally content concealing and easy to close, it might be time for you to make a change.
- If you have a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy, and you're on Medicare or have major medical insurance, your ostomy supplies may be covered!
